Rochdale town centre Metrolink extension: Electrification of overhead power lines

posted 16 Apr 2013, 02:00 by Rochdale TC

The installation of the overhead line equipment is now well progressed. Once switched on, the overhead lines that run above the tramway will continuously carry electricity at a high voltage of 750 volts. With effect from Wednesday 17th April 2013, the overhead lines should be considered "live" at all times.

While the overhead lines do not pose any risk to people living nearby,

enclosed with this letter are two leaflets for your information, ‘Living near a Metrolink line’ which explains more about electrification, and ‘Working safely near Metrolink’.

If you own or occupy a property near the tramway and wish to carry out work within 2.75 metres (9 feet) of the overhead power lines, you need to be aware of the potential dangers and the need to formally obtain a "Permit to Work". You should also ensure that anyone who occupies your property or carries out work on or near your property is aware of the potential dangers and the need to obtain a "Permit to Work". You can find out more about this in ‘Working safely near Metrolink’.

Carrying out structural or refurbishment work to your property

The Rochdale town centre Metrolink extension, in line with our previously advertised information, is expected to open to passengers in 2014. Prior to opening to passengers, a testing and commissioning programme will be undertaken in Autumn/Winter this year.

Once the testing and commissioning programme begins, there will be some restrictions in place, for safety reasons, for any works carried out near the Metrolink line and the overhead lines.

If you are planning to undertake any structural or refurbishment works to your premises in the next year for example to the frontages or roofs, then we advise discussing this with us as early as possible. This would enable TfGM and our contractor, MPact-Thales, to identify specific periods over summer/autumn 2013 where we could look to facilitate any works you are planning to carry out.

If you would like to discuss any future works that you are planning or if you require any further information about Metrolink, please contact either 0161 244 1555 or email future.metrolink@tfgm.com. If requested, we can also visit you at home or at your place of work to discuss the project further.
