Dear Sir / Madam

What we’ve been doing

Following my letter to you in March you will have noticed work progressing on the Revealing the Roch project in the Butts area of Rochdale Town Centre. We have also started work on the roundabout at the junction between Newgate, the Esplanade and South Parade. Over the course of the past few months we have reinforced and stabilised the river walls and temporarily diverted the flow of the river to allow work to take place. We have now exposed much of the upstream section of the river in front of HSBC and The Walk and sections of the bridge dating from the Georgian/Regency period can clearly be seen. A specialist stone mason, working with our conservation architect will now start to repair and rebuild the bridge and river walls using stone sourced from a local quarry that matches the stone used to build the historic bridge. (Fletcher Bank quarry)

Next phase of work and planned traffic changes

During the next phase of work we will also complete repairs to the surface of the bridge and construct the new carriageway over the bridge to carry traffic. In order to complete this work out we will need to close the bottom of Yorkshire Street (at the junction with the Esplanade/South Parade) to traffic for up to 6 weeks from Monday 21 September to Friday 30 October 2015.  The closure is marked in green on the map below. During the closure,  Baillie Street will be made two way to enable deliveries and service vehicles to access properties in the affected area via South Parade and Constantine Road and then into Baillie Street behind the Regal Moon pub. Yorkshire Street is currently only accessible between 6pm and 10am and this will continue to be the case for the duration of the closure (i.e. there will be no access to Yorkshire Street and Baillie Street between 10am and 6pm Monday-Friday). Project staff will visit all of the businesses directly affected by the closure of Yorkshire Street in the next few weeks and also make contact with couriers (G4S, TNT, etc) to discuss how we can minimise the disruption.

Newgate will also be closed to traffic heading into the town centre and traffic will be diverted along the Esplanade for access to South Parade and Town Hall Square.

If you have any queries or concerns, project team staff are available at the River Roch information centre at 5 South Parade every Wednesday from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm. Please contact a member of our project team to book an appointment by email at:

The project is due to be completed in January 2016.
